Ephesians 3: 16-21 (NIVUK)

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Sometimes I look up into the night, in the clear nights of wintertime in Scotland where the universe seems never ending. The sky so huge. Going on forever.

One time, I stood by the side of a road in Australia, looking out over endless desert, stretching out to the curve of the earth. Featureless and magnificent, a line to where the earth meets the sky.

Some people have walked on the moon, that magnificent desolation, the earth rising above grey hills. So far, days away across the darkest black.

The Voyager spacecraft looked back across the Milky Way and spied on a pale blue dot. That dot where anyone who ever was has left a tiny mark, even just a dancing molecule within an atmosphere.

And you know, all of that, from the furthest galaxy from the earliest parts of the beginning of time itself seen by the most powerful telescopes in existence, is nothing.

Compared to the love of God.

It’s not even a speck of dust.

We can’t really imagine the distances involved, far less how small we are in comparison.

But in the love of God – we are everything.

We are everything. Our souls have no boundaries and God exists outwith even the idea of boundary. Imagine that. The unimaginable, seeing us and imagining us into grace and eternity.

 

Prayer:

 

Lord God – your love is boundless

I have boundaries

Help me let them go

So I have a glimpse of your love

So I have a glimpse of its eternity and my place within it.
